George Ward Spencer, 97, of Springfield, passed away peacefully in his home at Forest Glen on December 17, 2019.He was born February 15, 1922 in Springfield, the son of George William and Beatrice Opal (Ward) Spencer. George served his country proudly in the United States Air Force during WW II and remained interested in airplanes and model planes since. George retired from International Harvester and went on to travel around the United States visiting many of his relatives who had moved away as well as attending reunions for the USAF, staying connected to those he served with. George was preceded in death by his parents and beloved brothers; John “Jack” Spencer and wife Betty (Sparrow) Spence–Taylor, Larry and Shirley Spencer, his nephew and wife John and Barb Spencer, nieces; Cindy Hawkins and Molly Brackney and great nephew Kevin Hawkins. George is survived by his nieces; Peggy (Dan) Mitch, Jenny (Bill) Brackney, Esther (Ron) Houseman and nephews; Toby (Jenny) Spencer and Tim (Sherry) Spencer. He also leaves many great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank his good friends Bob and Lois Grashel for their love and kindness to George through their many years as neighbors and friends. The family also thanks the many nurses and aids that became his Forest Glen family, who loved and cared for him until the end. Thanks also to Day City Hospice for providing love and support to George and the family. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Monday in the JONES-KENNEY-ZECHMAN FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Alan Cain officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the services.
