George Benton Obituary

George Michael "Big Mike" Benton, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, left this world on February 26, 2025, at the age of 69. He passed away peacefully in Springfield, Ohio, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Urbana, Ohio, on October 22, 1955, to the late George L. and Virginia Benton, George grew up to be a man of great character and warmth, touching the lives of everyone he encountered.

Big Mike was the beloved husband of Deborah Benton, with whom he built a life rich in love and shared experiences. Together, they raised a family that includes their son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Tabitha Benton of Springfield, Ohio; their daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Mike Smith of Kenosha, Wisconsin; and a legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life: Kyle (Athena) Bennett, Rob (Jas) Taylor, Emily (Bryan) Robinson, Kiersten Benton, Joshua (Jenna) Taylor, and Kristopher M. Benton, along with eight great-grandchildren. George is also survived by his sisters, Barbara Courtney and Wanda Keeton, who will miss him dearly, as will many close personal friends who became like family over the years. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dawn Denise Mitchem.

Professionally, Big Mike dedicated many years of service to the Clark County Court System, working with Building and Grounds. He was known not only for his strong work ethic but also for his ability to make any task enjoyable for himself and his colleagues. Beyond his vocational achievements, George was a man of the community. He served as the Past President of the local Eagles, where he was respected for his leadership and commitment to service. His prowess and passion for bowling led him to be honored as a USBC Hall of Famer, a distinction that spoke to his skill and sportsmanship.

George's interests and hobbies painted the picture of a man who loved life and lived it to the fullest. An avid bowler, he could often be found at the lanes perfecting his game and encouraging others. His love for fishing was more than a pastime; it was a chance to bask in the serenity of nature and the excitement of the catch. Big Mike was also a quintessential social butterfly, relishing in the company of friends and family, sharing stories, and creating memories.

A dedicated family man, George's commitment to his loved ones was unwavering. He instilled in his children and grandchildren the values of kindness, perseverance, and humor. His legacy is one of laughter, love, and the importance of family bonds. As Mark Twain once said, "To get the full value of joy, you must have someone to divide it with." Big Mike lived by these words, spreading joy and sharing in the happiness of others throughout his life.

George Michael Benton's life was a testament to the power of friendship, the strength of community, and the depth of familial love. He will be remembered for his jovial spirit, his generous heart, and his ability to bring light into the lives of those around him. As we say goodbye to Big Mike, we celebrate the indelible mark he has left on our hearts and the countless ways he enriched our lives. His stories, his laughter, and his presence will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will continue to inspire and comfort us for generations to come. A gathering of Friends and Family will be held at JONES-KENNEY-ZECHMAN FUNERAL HOME, Sunday, March 2, 2025, from 2-3pm.
