Gustel “Gus or Smiley” Witten, 93, of Springfield, Ohio, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and community service. Born in Johnson, Kentucky, on April 23, 1931, he was the son of Frank and Anna (Van Hoose) Witten. Gus was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Margaret Witten; his brothers, Harkless (Nettie) Witten of Limerick, Ohio, and Edgar (Edna) Witten of Springfield, Ohio; and his sister, Freda Rice. He is survived by his son, Terry Witten of Springfield, Ohio; his niece, Juanita Hayes of Hilliard, Ohio; and great-niece Krista (Matthew) Couser, along with their children, Logan and Raegan Couser, all of St. Paris, Ohio, and special friends Greg Kooyman, Glen Grim, and Kerry Londergan.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Gus served his country with distinction from 1951 to 1954 and was involved in Operation Ivy, the first series of hydrogen bomb tests, where he was stationed in New Mexico. His military service was a source of immense pride for him, and he cherished the friendships he made along the way. For over 40 years, Gus was an active member of his church, Springfield Enterprise Baptist, since 1982, and he was a proud Mason for more than 60 years. He was baptized and saved in May of 1956. A proud member of several fraternal organizations, Gus was actively involved with Anthony Lodge #455 Free and Accepted Masons, the Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, the Springfield Shrine Club, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and the Union Hall. His dedication to these organizations showcased his commitment to service and his community.
Despite facing health challenges in recent years, Gus remained committed to attending church and being there for his son. He had a unique ability to connect with others, considering his neighbors, Mary and Jim Shull, Jim and Melissa Clingman, and Kyle McKinnon as family. Their support during his illness was invaluable. Gus was known for his unwavering dedication to his family, his beautiful garden, and the care he provided to his livestock and barn cats. He had a special way of making everyone feel welcome, often sharing stories and laughter. His famous catchphrase, “Will you go pick me a peach and while you’re at it, take some home for yourself and all the babies at your house,” is a testament to his generous spirit.
A special thank you goes to Shayna, who provided exceptional love and care during the last month of Gus’s life. Her presence during his final moments was a source of solace and strength. The family would also like to thank Dr. Sutter, Interim Healthcare, Springfield Cancer Center, and Ohio Valley Hospice. Gus will be remembered for his warm spirit, generous heart, and the positive impact he had on those around him. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A visitation will be held at Springfield Enterprise Baptist Church, 3501 S Urbana Lisbon Rd, South Charleston, OH 45368, on November 11, 2024, from 11-1 PM.
