John H. Steinhauer, 87, of Springfield, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, at the Allen View Healthcare Center. He was born February 22, 1939, in Commonsworth, Kentucky, the son of Charles Steinhauer and Nina (Hammond) (Steinhauer) Smith. John retired from Navistar where he worked for 35 years. He was a mason and belonged to the Anthony Lodge #455. John enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed puzzles, playing cards, history, and going out to breakfast with his friends. He is survived by his loving children Rodney (Sue) Steinhauer, Jennifer Steinhauer, Shane Steinhauer, Jason (Jennie) Steinhauer, and David Baxton; grandchildren Minda, June, Nikki (Ray), Reed, Josh, Jessica, Brooke (JT), JW, Payton, Aaron (Alex), Michaela, Kristen (Lance), and Josh; great grandchildren Dempsey, Evan, Ray Lee, Brayton, Ryder, Conner, Kolten, Rodney, Cash, Hendrex, Chase, Cody, Emma, Thomas, and Cecilia; and brother Bill Smith. He was proceeded in death by his loving wife JoAnn Steinhauer; son Brian Baxton; great grandsons Maddix and Rowan Strobl; parents and step-father U.B. Smith; 2 sisters, and 1 cousin. Services for John will be held Monday, June 1st at 11:00AM at the JONES-KENNEY-ZECHMAN FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Rick Clos officiating. Friends may visit with the family for one hour prior to the service. Entombment will follow at the Rose Hill Mausoleum. Condolences may be shared online at www.jkzfh.com.
