Julius Friis Obituary

Julius James Friis, known affectionately as James, passed away at the age of 92 on May 5, 2025, in Springfield, Ohio, leaving behind a legacy of courage, generosity, and service. Born in Washington, D.C., on November 4, 1932, to Julius and Lucille (Kurtz) Friis, James grew up with an unwavering sense of duty and a profound love for his country. James, an Air Force veteran, served his nation with honor and distinction, earning both the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. His commitment to service extended beyond his military career, as he remained actively involved with veteran associations, sharing his experiences and offering support to fellow servicemen and women. After his military service, James continued to touch lives through his work and personal interests. He was not just a man, but a Master Mason, a brother through and through. He was a collector of United Nations stamps, coins, and military paraphernalia, which reflected his ongoing fascination with history and global affairs. James was also an avid reader and amassed an impressive collection of books that covered a wide range of topics, showcasing his insatiable thirst for knowledge. James's love for aviation was evident in his enthusiasm for air shows, an interest that he joyfully shared with friends and family. His face would light up as he watched the aircraft soar through the sky, a testament to freedom and innovation he so deeply cherished. Those who knew James would describe him as a man of great courage, not just in his military endeavors but also in his personal life. He faced challenges with a steadfast resolve and inspired others to do the same. His generosity knew no bounds, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear to those in need. James was a loving father and is survived by his son, Mark Friis; his daughter-in-law, Gena (John) Friis; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by the love of his life Carol and his two sons, James Carl Friis and John David Friis, as well as his parents, Julius and Lucille Friis.

In reflection of his life, the words of Winston Churchill come to mind: "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." James embodied this sentiment fully, enriching the lives of those around him through his selflessness and compassion. James's life was a tapestry woven with threads of bravery, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to the values he held dear. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we find comfort in the memories he leaves behind and the indelible mark he has left on our hearts. His spirit will continue to guide and inspire us, just as it did throughout his remarkable life. Arrangements are being made by JONES-KENNEY-ZECHMAN FUNERAL HOME. Per James’ wishes, he will be cremated. No services are scheduled at this time. Condolences may be shared at www.jkzfh.com
