LaMar James “Benny” Bennett, 79, of Springfield, Ohio, transitioned to heaven on Monday, March 2, 2026 in Springfield. He was born November 27, 1946 in Clyde, Ohio, son of the late Robert and Fredalene (Payden) Bennett.
LaMar was a 1964 graduate of Clyde High School, where he lettered in track, baseball, and cross country. He played on the only undefeated basketball team in Clyde High School history. Following high school, Benny attended and graduated from The Ohio State University and Capital University Law School, earning his Juris Doctor in Law. He opened his own law firm in Springfield, LaMar J. Bennett, Attorney and Counselor at Law, specializing as a Defense Attorney
A Veteran and Bronze Star recipient of the Vietnam War, he served his country as a Chaplain Assistant in the United States Army.
He was an all-around athlete who enjoyed and excelled in many sports, including racquetball, tennis, jogging, and bowling. He was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Ohio State Buckeyes and all teams in Cleveland. He never missed a Cleveland Indians/Guardians game.
LaMar was active in the community, volunteering on the board of Big Brothers/Big Sisters and McKinley Hall.
Mr. Bennett had a strong moral character, and he always championed the cause for peace, understanding, and racial equality. He acknowledged everyone he came into contact with; no person was more valuable than another in LaMar’s eyes.
Survivors include his beloved daughter, Ashley Bennett (Tyler Siegenthaler) and granddaughter, Callie Siegenthaler (his sun, moon, and stars); his brother, Alan (Vikki) Bennett; Ashley’s mother and Benny’s devoted friend, Deb Bennett; niece, Shane (Bryan) McCracken, and their sons, Gavin (Valeria) and Hayden McCracken; nephew, Colin Bennett, and his daughters, Addison and Abigail Bennett. A special thanks to Alan and Vikki for being instrumental in helping LaMar maintain his independence. He is also survived by family members, Mike and Jill Lloyd; nephews, Mike and Tyler Lloyd; as well as many dear friends and other family members. Benny was preceded in death by numerous friends and loved ones.
